In a landscape where unequal access to quality education disadvantages learners in lower quintiles, the impact of the 2020 school closure due to COVID-19 was felt more extremely by those in poorer communities. In response, we collated term and grade-specific workbooks to keep learners engaged in the curriculum. Thanks to city-wide collaborations with after-school programs, individuals, schools, churches, community groups and corporates we were able to distribute 25 000 workbooks to learners.

With so much in-class teaching time lost last year, many learners progressed despite learning gaps in their 2020 grade-specific content. This puts these learners at a higher risk of school dropout. After-school programs are ideally placed to help learners remain engaged in learning. As a network, our focus is on curriculum recovery for all our learners. Tutors are being trained to assess learning gaps and to provide opportunities for academic support to enable catch-up and revision.

Here’s how you can support our 2021 Curriculum Recovery Plan.

Help us reach all 20 000 learners in our network!
As an individual, sponsor workbooks (R100/learner) from Oxford University Press and The Answer Series to help assess learning gaps.
As a school, you can collect stationery and textbooks to supplement the workbooks.
As a church, run a book drive to collect suitable reading books to create library corners in after-school programs.
As a community group, make sure that every child is in an after-school program, even starting one should you need to. We’re here to help!
As a corporate, fund training of tutors to assess learning gaps and support students (R1000/session).
As an after-school program, join the network and help us advocate for curriculum recovery for all our learners.
